Shortly before 2:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 25, officers from the Nassau County Police Department responded to Burnett Street in Hempstead, where there was a man in his 30s on the ground with gunshot wounds, police said.

The man - identified two days later as Hempstead resident Jose Leonardo Sanchez - was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation into the homicide led to the arrest of Hempstead resident Kadeem Lewis, 26, who was taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder and violation of parole. A second man, Richard Ford, 33, who is listed as homeless, was also arrested on Friday, Feb. 7 for the incident and was also charged with second-degree murder.  Both are scheduled to be arraigned on Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
